2015 ATHERTON OPM

Six Ravenshoe shooters attended the Atherton Prize Shoot 5th – 6th September 2015. There were 30 shooters on Saturday (TR 12, FS 13 & FO 5) and 24 on Sunday. F/TR was not included.
Ravenshoe was well represented in the scores. Conditions were quite warm with changeable south-easterly winds. On DAY 1 Jason Kuchel placed 1st at 1000 yards x 15 shot match and came 3rd in the Day 1 Aggregate in Target Rifle A. Kevin Chatfield came 3rd at 900 yards x 15 shots and 2nd at the 1000 yards x 15 shot matches. He came 1st in the Day 1 Aggregate in FSA. Kate Chatfield came 3rd at 1000 yards x 15 shot match and 2nd in the Day 1 Aggregate in FSA. Mick Wood was 1st at 1000 yards x 15 shot match and 3rd in the Day 1 Aggregate in FSA.
Not everyone who shot Day 1 turned up for Day 2. The two days were classified as two separate matches, so there was a new draw on the Sunday. As it was Father’s Day, Kate took Kevin & Kelly to the beach to celebrate the day, so they did not contest Day 2. That left the Wilsons & Mick to see if they could cut the mustard. As it turned out, Liz managed a 3rd at the 700 y in FSA , Mick had a 3rd at 500 in FSA and Murray got a 2nd at 300 and 500 & a 3rd in the Day 2 Aggregate in FSA.
GO RAVENSHOE!!…… Let’s take it all out for our OPM!!!

2015 QRA QUEENS BELMONT RIFLE RANGE, BRISBANE 12 – 16 AUGUST

Following the F Class National Teams shoot in Brisbane 10th to 11th August 2015 where North Queensland was placed 2nd in F/TR and 3rd in F Standard and F Open over seven other F Class National Teams, eight Ravenshoe shooters stayed on to contest the QRA Queens.
Prior to the Queens, there was the Brisbane Rifle Club’s OPM on 8/8/15, where Murray Wilson claimed the 500 range in FSA, and the Metropolitan District Rifle Association OPM on 9/8/15 where Murray took out the 1000 yard range and 4th Aggregate (in FSA) and Liz Wilson the 1000 yards and 3rd Aggregate (in FSB). Then the lead-up to the Queens, the Duncan, started on 12/8/15. This had 37 FA, 22 FB, 57 FO and 30 FTR shooters and comprised 300, 500 & 600y on Day 1. Liz Wilson won 1st range medal for 600 with a 59.4 and Day 1 aggregate badge in FSB. Day 2 was 900 & 1000y. Liz got 7th Duncan Badge in FSB.
Then on Friday, 14/8/15 the competition started in earnest in the QRA Queens with seven Highlanders attending. Target Rifle numbers were down due to many top shooters competing at Camp Perry in the USA. 73 TRA, 42 TRB, 8 TRC, 46 FSA, 27 FSB, 60 FO and 40 F/TR competed. A great increase in F-Open and an excellent F/TR contingent. Day 1 was made up of 300, 500 and double 600 where competition was fierce and possibles were the order of the day. Liz won a Day 1 aggregate coming 2nd in FSB.
Day 2 expanded the ranges to 500, 800, and double 900. Kevin Chatfield came 1st at 500 with a commendable 60.8 and 2nd at 900 with 57.1 and a 2nd Day 2 aggregate in FSA. This was well deserved under incredibly changing wind conditions.
Day 3 comprised 900 & 1000 yards. Kev kept a cool head and was victorious at 900 with a 60.6. Mick Wood did well to score 59.3 in FSA. Kate Chatfield also did well with a 57.4. At a 1000 yards Liz Wilson managed to take out FSB with a 54.4.
Considering our numbers, Ravenshoe/Mt Garnet Rifle Club certainly made our presence felt with FSA winners being: Kevin Chatfield 1st Queens Badge; Kate Chatfield 8th Badge. Congratulations Kevin on a great effort for your 1st Queens. Chris Allman took 9th Badge in F/TR. Liz Wilson took out 6th Queens Badge and 2nd Grand Aggregate Badge (Total of Duncan & Queens) in FSB.
All in all it was a great competition. The weather held off with rain (except for Day 2 of the Duncan where a 600y shoot had to be cancelled due to delays with rain). The camping sites & facilities were good, the meals were great and most of all good camaraderie was the order of the day. We all hope to do even better next year.

Mossman Prize Meeting

The Mossman Prize Meeting was held the weekend of 4-5 July 2015. A good turn up of 38 shooters (7 TR1, 5 TR2, 5 FS1, 12 FS 2 & 9 FO) enjoyed warm weather and fine conditions. 10 Ravenshoe shooters attended. The first day was 400, 600 and 500 metres and Sunday’s matches comprised 500 and 600 metres. There were some great scores recorded with quite a few possibles.
Peter Burg, competing in F Open, took out all ranges bar 2, thereby winning four range prizes, both Daily Aggregates and scored 298.28 to take out the Grand Aggregate one point over Gary Venables (297.23), with Trevor Armstrong third (295.24). Sadly, Gary is no longer a member of the Ravenshoe tribe, having moved to Cairns a short while ago.
In Target Rifle 1 Jason Kuchel came 1st at 400 & 500m with a 3rd in the Day 1 Aggregate. On Sunday he won the 600m and came 1st  in the Day 2 Aggregate and 2nd in the Grand Aggregate with a score of 247.33 – just one point behind the winner, Dudley Ford.
Kevin Chatfield came 1st at 400m, 3rd at 600m, 2nd at 500 with a 2nd in the Day 1 Aggregate and 2nd at 500m, 1st at 600m and 1st in the Day 2 Aggregate. Kathy was 3rd at 400m, 2nd at 600m, 3rd at 500m and 3rd in the Day 1 Aggregate. On Sunday she came 3rd at 500m, 2nd at 600m with a 3rd in the Day 2 Aggregate. Grand Aggregate winners in F Standard 1 were: 1st Jim Blomfield (295.21), 2nd Kevin Chatfield (293.21) & 3rd Kathy Chatfield (292.17).
A greatly improved Murray Wilson did not let the side down in F Standard 2 with a 1st at the 400m range and a third place in the Day 1 Aggregate. (He won a shoot-off with Bill Glavin from Townsville, but as it happened they were both beaten by up and coming Atherton shooter, Travis Kohn!). On Sunday he came 2nd at 600m and 2nd in the Grand Aggregate (286.21) behind Travis Kohn (293.15), with Wayne Swift 3rd (286.10).
A great effort by our Ravenshoe shooters – hopefully to be repeated at the Cairns shoot in August.

Congratulations to Betta and her assistants (Jean, Kelly(Chit Chat) and of course master of ceremonies Greg Gartner for doing such a sterling job as Chief Range Officer. Sad to see he’s retiring. Not to mention the other Emcee, Bruce Scott – sterling performance, as always.
